2016-09: NHMRC priorities for research into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is committed to allocating at least 5% of the Medical Research Endowment Account to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research. The NHMRC invited submissions on research priorities that could form the subject of a Targeted Call for Research (TCR) funding applications. Recent examples of TCRs include suicide prevention and foetal alcohol disorder among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Further information is available here.
AAG endorsed the Melbourne Health submission to this consultation (which was supported by eight leading researchers) and raised the following additional issues for consideration:
- Multidisciplinary approach required
- Research must comply with revised ethical guidelines
- Ageing in place should be a priority
- Just doing the research is not enough.
AAG's submission is available here.
