2020-06 ATSIAAG supplementary submission to Royal Commission into Aged Care

On 25 June 2020, AAG's ATSIAAG made a supplementary submission to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety to complement the August 2019 ATSIAAG submission to the Royal Commission.

Since 12 August 2019, the Royal Commission released its Interim report, ‘Aged Care in Australia: A Shocking Tale of Neglect’ on 31 October 2019. From an AAG ATSIAAG perspective this report identified ten areas of focus flagging potential recommendations for reform. One of these areas that was identified was, ‘Chapter 7 – Elders are our Future’ and looked at the evidence and information submitted to the Royal Commission in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Independent of the release of this interim report, the Australian Association of Gerontology conducted its 52nd National Conference in Sydney from 4 – 8 November 2019, Coming of Age Together: New Ways of Knowing & Acting. On Tuesday 5 November 2019, the AAG ATSIAAG hosted a Pre-Conference workshop which was attended by 35 participants. The workshop was titled ‘Integrated Culturally Sensitive Services for Older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: Practical Solution or Pipe Dream’. A full report of this workshop and its key findings and recommendations was attached to the submission and is available here.

The purpose of this submission is to share with the Royal Commissions those key findings and recommendations from the 2019 ATSIAAG workshop which we believe are complementary and supportive to those findings and recommendations highlighted in ‘Chapter 7– Elders are our Future’. In addition, ATSIAAG requests that the Royal Commission consider supporting our recommendation to establish a Peak Body for older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
