Getting to know you ..... Dr Rachel Ambagtsheer
What is your day job and how do you engage with AAG?
I’m a Research Fellow and Ph.D. candidate with Torrens University Australia, based in Adelaide. My current research focus is on frailty and specifically exploring the appropriateness of introducing frailty screening into Australian general practice settings (a project led by Professor Justin Beilby). The project is a collaborative one conducted through the NHMRC-funded Centre of Research Excellence in Frailty and Healthy Ageing, led by Professor Renuka Visvanathan.
I also became the AAG Student and Early Career Group National President in November 2019.
What is your favourite thing about your career?
My research position allows me the independence and freedom to work on topics that are fascinating to me.
What does AAG and gerontology mean for you?
Gerontology to me means the art and science of ageing positively. Being involved with AAG has allowed me to meet and work with amazing people in this area.
What do you hope to get out of being AAG’sSECG National President?
I would like to meet and engage with many more of the Student and Early Group members over the year and to provide an interesting selection of activities to add value to belonging to the AAG family. We plan to continue to capitalise on the successful SECG led webinars, a pre-conference workshop with Emerging Researchers in Ageing (ERA), Breakfast with the Stars and other exciting events during the conference. Stay posted for further information.
Where would we find you on a Saturday afternoon?
Hanging out with like-minded people, drinking coffee and chewing the fat at a writers’ group, writing historical mystery genre!
Who is your “hero” and why?
As corny as it sounds, my dad. As is typical of many people who migrate to Australia from overseas, one of the core values that he instilled in me was the value of having a strong work ethic in order to achieve your goals. He sacrificed a lot for my sister and me as we were growing up. He wanted us both to be happy and successful, professionally and personally, so I feel I owe a lot to him.
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I am a huge ‘The Walking Dead’ fan and my household is well prepared for the inevitable zombie apocalypse, when it comes.
