Who is listening? Consequences of untreated hearing loss in the elderly

The Australian Association of Gerontology invites you to an evening to learn more about association between hearing loss and dementia.

Dementia is the leading cause of disability among Australians aged 65 or older and also the second leading cause of mortality. Developing effective strategies to prevent dementia has become a global health priority, with projections suggesting that the total number of people living with dementia could be reduced by 13% if the onset of symptoms could be delayed by 2 years or more. Available evidence from observational studies indicate that hearing loss accounts for 8% of the modifiable risk factors of all cases of dementia.

Our guest speaker, Dr Dona Jayakody, is currently leading the HearCog trial randomised control trial to determine if the correction of hearing loss through the fitting of hearing aids decreases cognitive decline in those at risk. This presentation will discuss the consequences of untreated hearing loss, association between hearing loss and dementia and the HearCog trial.

  • Hear about the links between hearing loss and dementia
  • Learn about the consequences of untreated hearing loss
  • Understand the impact of hearing loss treatment on cognitive functions of older adults

Hear from our speaker:

Dr Dona Jayakody
is a Senior Research Audiologist and the Research Lead of the Cognition and Hearing Loss Project at Ear Science Institute Australia & Director- Australian Society for Medical Research. Her research focuses on (i) identification of the causal association between hearing loss and dementia, (ii) development of central hearing assessments that would help identifying those at risk of dementia, and (iii) investigation of the impact of hearing loss rehabilitation, on cognitive functions of hearing impaired older adults.
