Webinar - Dementia and BPSD-Diagnosis and Medical Treatments of Confusion in the Elderly
Care and management of Australians living with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) has become a significant issue in healthcare, with the rising prevalence of dementia worldwide. This is an important issue in the hospital setting, where BPSD can also mimic other aetiologies of confusion in the elderly.
The webinar addresses common behavioural problems associated with dementia and differential diagnosis to consider. Management of confusion in the elderly will also be discussed, including behavioural, environmental and medical strategies.
The speakers will cover the basics of dementia, including bedside testing principles, neuroimaging, medication approaches, interpretation and certainty of diagnosis.

Associate Professor Peter Gonski,
Senior Staff Specialist Geriatrician and Director of Southcare, Division of Aged and Extended Care Sutherland Hospital and Community.
Associate Professor Peter Gonski is the Director of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Aged Care and Rehabilitation Clinical Stream. He is a Conjoint Associate Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, UNSW. He is a board member of Montefiore Aged Care, the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District and the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation. He has had 25 years’ experience in clinical geriatrics, and his passion is to provide innovative models of patient centred care.
Consultant Psychogeriatrician, Staff Specialist and Medical Lead for Specialist Mental Health Services for Older Persons team.
Dr Neil Jeyasingam is the Binational NSW representative for the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry. A Senior Lecturer with Western Sydney University, and research scholar with the Maudsley Institute of London, he has interests in electroconvulsive therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and neuroimaging in dementia.
