QLD Event - ‘Failure to maintain’: Older people with Dementia in Hospital

Older people with dementia are at high risk of developing hospital-acquired complications, which may contribute to accelerated deterioration in their function and cognition.

In this seminar, Dr Bail will share the findings from the Hospital Dementia Study, conducted as part of her doctoral studies. The presentation will focus on the emerging theoretical framework of ‘Failure to Maintain’, identifying nurse sensitive indicators of care for older people with dementia.

Attendees will:

  • Learn more about the common complications for older people, and particularly older people with dementia, in hospital;
  • Consider how prevention of complications for this population can be addressed through fundamental care; and
  • Discuss the barriers and facilitators to delivering fundamental care to older people in hospital.

Hear from the Leading Expert

Dr Kasia Bail, Assistant Prof, University of Canberra

Dr Bail’s primary work interest is to improve sustainable acute care health delivery for an ageing population. Her research career has always been complemented by hospital nursing roles. Her peer reviewed publications are well-cited and range in topics from aged care nurse practitioners, prognosis communication, policy analysis, dementia care in hospitals, and the costs of hospital-acquired complications. Dr Bail’s approach to measuring nurse-sensitive outcomes is currently being used to evaluate a Government-funded intervention.
