Psychology In Gerontology
Most older people do not develop mental health problems, and can be helped if they do. However, a significant number of older people do experience psychological or emotional distress associated with isolation, loss of independence, loneliness and losses of many kinds including bereavements - all factors linked to old age. Older people living alone or in residential/nursing care and those with physical illnesses and/or disabilities are more at risk, with some 40% affected by depression.
This event will explore two emerging and under researched areas of psychology. The first topic is “Successful ageing: Leading a life of meaning and purpose”, which highlights the importance of recognising that moving into old age is a time for recreation and renewal.
The second topic is “Sexual Assault and Sexual Deviance of Older persons in Care” and includes discussion of current literature to guide understanding and management of sexuality and sexual behaviour by aged persons.
Key Points of Discussion:
- Discover the latest assessment and management tools to assist with the identification of risk and response strategies to challenging behaviours.
- The expression of sexuality may result in behaviours that are challenging to manage in aged care environments.
- The work of ageing as leading a life with purpose, and entering a new stage of life fulfilment.
This seminar is being held in collaboration with the Australian Psychological Society - Psychology and Ageing Interest Group (APS PAIG)
