Professional Networking Naturally

Networking… An opportunity to meet someone new and see how you can help each other. Sounds easy enough?

Yet, for some people, networking can feel uncomfortable and contrived. For others, just the thought of an upcoming networking event can be daunting. The awkward hellos, flamboyant bios, feigned interest and fake smiles - the pressure we put on ourselves to be fabulous and interesting to our colleagues and other professionals in the field can make networking overwhelming.

Yet networking happens anywhere, anytime, not just at “networking events.” So how do we transfer the communication skills we use every day to the professional environment, so that our networking conversations can be more effective and less stressful?

Julie Byles will reflect on her significant professional relationships at both national and international levels to share some of her stories, hints and tips for successful networking. She will also consider the ongoing nature of networking even as an established and well known person in gerontology.

Belinda Cash will share some 'newcomer' perspectives on professional networking. She will discuss some strategies to develop and make the most of networking skills from the student and early career research stage, to start the lifelong pathway to networking more naturally.

Participants will learn:

  • The 'how to' protocol of approaching someone you are keen to meet/network with - icebreakers to start up a conversation; skills for success; what to do and what not to do.
  • Ways to network away from conferences
  • Establishing goals for networking
  • Networking tips for both introverts and extroverts
  • Overcoming 'celebrity syndrome' and its associated reluctance to approach your academic idols!
