At the start of Dementia Awareness Month hear how the latest research
evidence and tools are affecting the way we provide quality care for
people with dementia.



The environment where older Australians receive care, and the care practices within this environment, have been a focus of the current Royal Commission on Aged Care Quality and Safety.

During this session you will hear how the Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre’s (CDPC) program of research is influencing care for people with dementia in the community, hospital and residential aged care setting, both nationally and internationally. Research on quality use of medicines for people with dementia and what an optimal aged care environment looks like to improve quality of life for people with dementia will be examined.

Professor Susan Kurrle

Professor Susan Kurrle is Director of the Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre and a geriatrician practising at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital and at Batemans Bay Hospital. She has an interest in diagnosis and management of dementia and has developed memory clinics in both urban and rural settings. She holds the Curran Chair in Health Care of Older People in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney and has led the Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre since 2012.



Professor Sarah Hilmer

Professor Sarah Hilmer is a Senior Staff Specialist Geriatrician and Head of Department of Clinical Pharmacology at Royal North Shore Hospital and Conjoint Professor of Geriatric Pharmacology at the University of Sydney. Her research investigates optimising medication use for people with geriatric syndromes including frailty, falls and cognitive impairment. The remainder her time is allocated to clinical (acute geriatric medicine and clinical pharmacology), policy (medication management) and teaching (geriatric medicine and clinical pharmacology). Professor Hilmer has been awarded institutional, state and national and international prizes for teaching, research supervision and mentorship.


Dr Suzanne Dyer

Dr Suzanne Dyer is a Senior Research Fellow in the Rehabilitation, Aged and Extended Care unit at Flinders University under Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre funding, contributing to research within the fields of dementia, fragility fracture and rehabilitation and ageing. Dr Dyer research includes producing the NHMRC approved clinical practice guidelines for dementia in Australia and is currently managing the INSPIRED cross-sectional study of models of residential aged care for people living with dementia in Australia.

Anne is Principal Advisor for Cognitive Impairment at the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality
in Health Care where the focus of her work has been to increase awareness and action to address
cognitive impairment as a quality and safety issue in Australian hospitals. Anne has also been involved
in the Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre from its beginning, firstly as a system based investigator
when working in dementia policy in NSW Health and then in providing policy advice as required.
Anne's clinical background is in social work.

AAG has been successfully running these webinars for number of years now. However we have noticed recently that increasing numbers of our registrants are experiencing difficulties when trying to join the online event.

In all cases this is as a result of the IT set-up at your end. Healthcare and academic workplaces are introducing increasing levels of security to guard against viruses and data theft. Some of those security measures are disrupting the connection to our Go-to-Training Software. There are also some situations where registrants need to make adjustments to the set-up of their home IT before they can successfully join.

It is therefore vitally important that you test your connection before the day of the event.

We are a small organisation in terms of employed staff and on the day of the event most of our resources are dedicated to delivering the webinar, we cannot therefore promise to be available to help you with connection enquiries either just before or after the event has actually started.
