Frailty for All or Successful Ageing - What are the Options?

Frailty can now be viewed as a progressive loss of physiological reserve in one or more of the major body systems. Such individuals are vulnerable to relatively minor insults that may lead to the development of stereotypical geriatric clinical syndromes, such as falls. Although the associated risk factors for the development of frailty and geriatric syndromes are increasingly being determined, major challenges remain.

Can we determine the point at which the cascade of deleterious consequences may occur?
What interventions will reduce frailty and provide increased longevity without major morbidity?

Leon will discuss the importance of lifestyle and psychosocial factors, in addition to genetic factors, for increasing the probability of reaching older years in a healthy state. He will address factors such as body mass index which may have differing effects throughout the life course. He will also examine how older people can still be actively engaged with social activities, without major perceived restrictions, even in the presence of major chronic diseases and associated disability.
