Exploring the impacts of social distancing on older adults

Presented by Charles Sturt University and the Australian Association of Gerontology

The impacts of a global pandemic are currently being experienced across Australia, with a growing number of restrictions being placed on the way individuals and society connect and function. Throughout the crisis, heightened risks of the virus to older adults have been forefront in discussions at policy, practice and individual levels. These concerns have led to additional social distancing recommendations for adults over 70 years, who are being encouraged not to leave their homes at all and to avoid social contact.

While this advice is intended to protect older adults from contracting coronavirus, social distancing itself can be a significant risk to physical and mental health and wellbeing. This webinar will explore the potential impacts of social distancing and social isolation on older adults and begin a conversation about strategies and solutions to overcome these challenges.
