ALSA Coming of Age: Stories of Resilience in the Oldest Old

The Australian Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ALSA) has come of age since beginning in 1992. ALSA is a multidisciplinary study of a cohort of 2087 participants. One of the principle aims of ALSA has been to focus on the process of ageing well, rather than focusing on losses, to provide a positive emphasis on ageing.

Professor Luszcz will provide descriptions of the study participants and the information that has been collected during the course of this important, longitudinal study. She will share insights and knowledge gathered through ALSA from 1992 to the present.

Dr Browne-Yung will share the findings from a qualitative study of in- depth life course interviews with 20 of the oldest old successfully ageing ALSA participants. The study analysed participants’ recollections of their lifetime experiences and how they negotiated and coped with key periods of their lives in order to explore factors that may influence resilience in ageing.
