This third seminar in the Macquarie Aged Care Policy Forum series will look at issues concerning the future provision of aged care in the home and community that remain as ‘unfinished business’ from the Aged Care Royal Commission and the Australian Government’s response.

The Royal Commission made 18 recommendations about home and community aged care. The Government has accepted 12 of these, accepted 5 more in principle and committed to more funding for the other one. Importantly, it has made home care the first of its five pillars of the future aged care system and committed to a single integrated Support at Home Program. However, substantial questions remain about the specifics of the proposed reforms and their implementation, particularly in relation to the design of the single program; whether there will be adequate recognition of the services now provided through the CHSP that have long been the foundation of the Australian aged care system; the resolution of major design problems with the Packages; likely models of assessment and funding; the future role of local providers; and client experiences with Consumer Directed Care.
In the first part of the seminar each speaker will identify the major aspects of policy and program design for which they consider further action is necessary, followed by a panel discussion among the speakers. The second part of the seminar will provide the opportunity for questions and comments from all participants.

  • The seminars will continue bi-monthly in 2022.

The Macquarie Aged Care Policy Forum is convened by the Macquarie University School of Social Sciences, in conjunction with the Macquarie Ageing and Aged Care Researchers Network (MAACRN). The Forum is supported by the NSW Division of the Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG).
