Strategic Innovation Program 2022

The AAG Research Trust’s Strategic Innovation Program aims to facilitate dynamic and responsive research that will improve research impact by contributing to research translation.

The Strategic Innovation Program is informed by the following principles:

  • Responding to evidence needs while remaining independent
  • Promoting multidisciplinary and cross-sector collaboration
  • Emphasising policy and/or practice implications of research, supporting strategic and applied research and research translation
  • Addressing areas of need that are neglected by large scale funding priorities
  • Providing equity of access.

The Strategic Research Grants (formerly Strategic Research Grants) is structured as a sub-fund of the AAG Research TrustThe Strategic Innovation Program initiative was made possible by the generous bequest from the estate of William Peter Steele Nicolson in 2016/17.

Who should apply

Any AAG member is eligible to apply, however, in accordance with the Strategic Innovation Programs focus, applications from early and mid-career researchers up to eight years post-PhD, considering career interruption, and practitioners engaged in research, are strongly encouraged.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led applications

The AAG Research Trust is seeking research applications that are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander led with older Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their communities, and has separate guidelines to support this. This focus is supported and informed by the
AAG Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Ageing Advisory Group (ATSIAAG) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous researchers working in this area click here for more information.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led applications are eligible to apply for both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led focus within the Strategic Innovation Program and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dedicated Grant supported by the RM Gibson Program, although each application must be for a different project.  Both Programs are from AAG Research Trust.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants may apply for other grants from the AAG Research Trust  if they are not applying for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander opportunities detailed above.

Grants available in 2022

Two grants of up to $30,000 each, for 18 months will be awarded in the 2022 Strategic Innovation Program round, with scope for the AAG Research Trust’s Grants Committee (Grants Committee) to recommend adjustment to this amount if considered necessary

An additional grant of $30,000 for 18 months for an application with a substantive dementia focus may be funded as part of a partnership between the AAG Research Trust and Dementia Australia Research Foundation. At the discretion of the AAG Research Trust and Dementia Australia Research Foundation, this funding may be used to expand the number of grants that can be funded under the Strategic Innovation Program to a quality and fundable application with a substantive dementia focus.

This funding round will be run in parallel with the 2022 RM Gibson Program. Please note that applicants cannot apply for both of these funding rounds (subject to an exception for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants - see applicant guidelines). There is no limit as to how many times a person may be listed as a co-researcher in another person's application.

Applications closed at 11.55pm AEDT on 22nd March 2022 having been extended by one week due to recent events.

On 11th February 2021 we held a free webinar providing hints and tips for applying to funding programs, along with an insight into the structure and workings of the AAG Research Trust and its Grant award processes, our live Q&A panel were then able to answer some questions from our audience of potential applicants.
