David Wallace Address 2018

2018 David Wallace Address

Emeritus Professor Rosalind Croucher AM

Professor Croucher is currently the President of the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC). She was first appointed a full-time Commissioner of the ALRC by the Howard Government in 2007 and was made President in 2009. Professor Croucher was reappointed President in 2014 and subsequently in 2015 for a further three-year term.

Professor Croucher has had an illustrious career as a lawyer and member of the academy. She has an outstanding reputation for her pragmatic, constructive and analytical approach to law reform. Her strong leadership of the ALRC, and expertise in complex areas of the law, has enhanced its respected public image.

Since becoming President of the ALRC, Professor Croucher has led nine significant law reform inquiries. She led the Freedoms Inquiry – one of the most comprehensive reviews ever undertaken by the ALRC into the consistency of Commonwealth legislation with traditional rights, freedoms and privileges. Professor Croucher has also led many other significant law reform inquiries into human rights, including disability, age discrimination and elder abuse and family violence.

Prior to her appointment to the ALRC, Professor Croucher had a distinguished academic career. She was Dean of Law at Macquarie University and held positions in law with the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney.
Professor Croucher was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015 for significant service to the law as an academic, to legal reform and education, to professional development and to the arts.

Professor Croucher’s leadership and experience will bring strength to the role and make her the right person to implement and oversee the significant reforms to the AHRC arising from the passage of the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Act 2017.
The David Wallace Address was established to honour the life of Dr David Wallace, a founding member of the AAG and a pioneer of gerontology and geriatric medicine in Australia. The Address is offered to an exceptional contributor to gerontology or closely related fields in Australia
