LGBTI Ageing Research Position Paper Project

AAG conducted a series of projects on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) ageing research between 2017-2019:

1. Scoping Review of LGBTI ageing research internationally

We conducted a Scoping Review of publications up until 26 July 2018 about:
1. LGBTI people, and
2. Ageing/dementia.

Publications were excluded if they did not meet the inclusion criteria for LGBTI ageing research and/or if they were: a book review, media article, grant proposal, meeting abstract or meeting minutes, or focussed on a comparison of different age groups (i.e. not focussed on ageing).

Access the full Scoping Review Report here.

An Excel file with summary information for all of the 837 publications included in the Scoping Review is available here.

2. Funding of LGBTI ageing research in Australia

We considered information from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Australian Research Council (ARC) about what LGBTI ageing research they have funded. These findings are summarised in the Position Paper on LGBTI Ageing Research in Australia.

3. Survey of Australian LGBTI ageing researchers

We conducted a survey of Australian LGBTI ageing researchers about what issues they are currently working on; about their sources of funding; and about what they believe are the priority areas for future LGBTI ageing research.

Access the final report on the Survey of LGBTI Ageing Researchers in Australia here.

The Participant Information Sheet for the survey can be found here. The ethics approval for this survey can be found here.

Implications for policy and practice

The findings from these three projects and their implications for ageing and aged care policy and practice were then compiled into a position paper.

What is LGBTI Ageing Research?

By 'LGBTI ageing research' we mean research that is related to the process of growing old, the experiences of those typically categorised as older, and the delivery of services or other resources (e.g. informal care) to older people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex, and those who might describe themselves in different ways (e.g. gender diverse, queer or two-spirit).
