Board Opportunity – Elder Abuse Action Australia

Elder Abuse Action Australia (EAAA), of which AAG is a proud member, is seeking two individuals to join the Board. Passion, skills and commitment are needed to help end the abuse and mistreatment of older people.

Appointed Directors are elected for a term of up to three years, and interest from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and/or cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged.

Criteria

• Government relations and/or public relations to build awareness of EAAA and elder abuse within government key stakeholders, and in other spheres of influence.
• Communications and marketing and/or content creation.
• Business transformation, reputational growth and funding diversity.
• Corporate governance, including finance.
• Knowledge and understanding of the abuse and mistreatment of older people is highly desirable.

Key dates

• Expressions of Interest submitted by 3 July
• Applicants shortlisted by 10 July
• Interviews held by 20 July
• Appointments and notifications to unsuccessful candidates by 24 July

Research to Practice Episode 2 is on next week – 16 June

AAG Conversations Research to Practice series is creating bi-monthly opportunities to translate evidence into real-world impact across ageing and aged care.

AJA June Spotlight: Care by Name, Not by Nature

This month’s Australasian Journal on Ageing research spotlight highlights a study led by Caitlin Wyman, PhD candidate, Flinders University, and including contributions from AAG members Dr Michael Lawless, Dr Jolene Thomas and Dr Alison Yaxley.

Using semi-structured interviews, this study explored the experiences and perceptions of older adults accessing an Australian Government Home Care Package to determine how recipients prioritise their package expenditure, understand the value placed on food and nutrition and the barriers and facilitators to spending on these services.

Four themes developed from the study, with participants expressing a lack of person-centred care, making it difficult to obtain services that met their care needs and preferences. This exploratory study reveals a potential need for better monitoring and regulation across the Home Care Package program to ensure that recipients experience consumer-directed care.
