Life after a PhD can be both exciting and uncertain. Many ECRs and students face questions about what comes next: whether to pursue academia, transition into industry, or explore alternative career paths. Navigating these choices can be challenging without guidance or shared experiences.
This webinar brings together professionals from diverse sectors to share their journeys beyond the PhD and give advice for planning their post-PhD career, especially targeting those at the end of their PhD journey
Through short talks and open discussion, attendees will gain insights into career transitions, opportunities within and outside of academia, and strategies for building fulfilling professional lives at this stage of their career. Across gerontology and beyond, this session offers valuable perspectives and a supportive space to explore your future.

Dr Charlotte McKercher
Project Lead, Ageing and Aged Care Analysis Unit
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)
Dr Charlotte McKercher is an epidemiologist and public health practitioner with over 20 years of experience across government, medical research, and consultancy.
She holds a PhD in Epidemiology/Public Health and currently serves as Project Lead in the Ageing and Aged Care Analysis Unit at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). Charlotte brings deep expertise in communicable and non-communicable diseases, research methodology, and public health surveillance.

Dr Gabi Picard
Postdoctoral research fellow
Macquarie University Lifespan Health & Wellbeing Research Centre
Dr Gabi Picard a postdoctoral research fellow, Clinical Neuropsychology Registrar, and a member of the Macquarie University Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Research Centre. I work on a range of projects that focus on supporting older adult wellbeing, and I have a particular interest in understanding the experiences and needs of informal dementia carers.
Dr Rosalyn Stanton
Allied Health clinician
Canberra Health Services Office of Research and Education
Rosalyn is an Allied Health clinician, educator, researcher, and leader. With a background of Physiotherapy, her post graduate qualifications include a Master a Health Science (2009), and a PhD in Neurological Physiotherapy (2016). She currently works in the Canberra Health Services Office of Research and Education leading initiatives to build research capacity and capability among clinicians. She holds an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Canberra.
Dr Alice Pashley
Postdoctoral research fellow
Centre for Ageing Research and Translation
Dr Alice Pashley is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Ageing Research and Translation (CARAT), University of Canberra. Her research interest include improving food, nutrition, and mealtimes in rehabilitation and residential aged care. Her work in CARAT focuses on evaluating innovative models of residential aged care.
