Ms Jodie Tse (PhD candidate) provides the clarified concept of disempowerment and the experiences and perceptions among older adults with chronic illness to advance the understanding of disempowerment from older adults’ perspective.
Ms Kathy Puyk (PhD student) explores how evidence-based practice can empower nurses to deliver safer, more confident, and more effective wound management in gerontological care. Her session highlights key international guidelines, practical assessment strategies, and approaches to strengthening clinical decision-making.
Dr Daphne Cheung examines how expressed emotions of carers affect communication and interaction with individuals with dementia. She explores person-centred approaches that strengthen connection, reduce distress, and support meaningful interactions.

Daphne is a registered nurse and researcher who focuses on dementia care, carer support, frailty and gerontology. Her work includes dyadic interaction between people with dementia and their family carers, the integration of technology into care, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her contributions to the field have been recognised through several prestigious international research awards, including the 2023 Claudia J. Beverley Innovative Award by the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing.

Kathy Puyk

Kathy is a Wound Clinical Nurse Consultant and executive officer for pressure injury prevention across Alfred Care Group. Kathy has over 30 years in nursing, education and wound management and is a current, and past working group member, supporting the International Pressure injury Prevention Guidelines and has led Delphi research on defining a pressure injury acquired in care. Kathy has commenced her PhD with a focus on improving pressure injury management and bridging the gap between evidence and practice.
