Foregrounding Dignity & Kindness In Residential Aged Care

The Australian Association of Gerontology ACT Division and the University of Canberra Ageing Research Group invites you to learn about the latest residential aged care initiatives from all over the world, and a special one in our own ACT backyard.

This event will feature two presentations. First, Luis Cordero will speak about his journey around the world to understand how different cultures are innovating to improve the care of older people. Australia is the last stop on a journey that has included Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Spain, France, Germany, and Nepal.

Second, Dr Rodney Jilek will present on Community Home Australia, an NDIS provider offering a range of specialist support services for people living with younger onset dementia. This includes supported independent living, day programs and holiday support.

  • Learn about residential aged care innovation in countries around the world
  • Gain knowledge on how different cultures care for older people
  • Learn about relationship-centred care for younger-onset dementia

Hear from our speakers:

Mr Luis Cordero
Watson Fellow, Davidson University, United States
Luis Cordero graduated from Davidson College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience with honors on the pre-med track and a minor in Gender & Sexuality Studies. From a young age, he was the primary caregiver to his late mother, diagnosed with schizophrenia and later with early-onset dementia. His late grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease soon after he left for college. Both of these experiences fueled his passion for understanding ageing worldwide and how culture impacts care.
