Student Section

Background

The Student Section was established in September 2004 with the support of an US$800 Student Section Development Grant from the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG). There continues to be great enthusiasm for this initiative within the AAG and the Student Section has made considerable progress.

A preliminary meeting of the student group was held at the 2003 National Conference in Hobart, Tasmania. There are regular teleconferences and annual meetings of the student membership at the AAG National Conferences held in November each year.

The student group was consolidated at the 2005 National Conference at the Gold Coast in Queensland, which hosted the Inaugural Student Dinner at the Palazzo Versace. This meeting strengthened rapport with the wider student membership and with student participants at the National Conference.

State level activities

State Division representatives are encouraged to work within their Divisions to hold local student activities, which may be based within a city or an individual campus. Successful activities have included student seminars, student workshops, presentations, wine and cheese evenings and dinners.

Links with the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics

Extending international links is a key role of the student network. One of the key areas of responsibility for the National Student Representative has been to foster and maintain communication with overseas student networks to exchange news and ideas relating to the interests of their country's gerontology students.
