18 October 2011   Men & Ageing Seminar and Expo   4pm till 7pm

Please download the flyer for the forthcoming seminar and expo on Men and Ageing brought to you by the Eastern Collaborative Project, the SA Division of the AAG and ANZSGM.   The seminar headlines with the current Adelaide Thinker in Residence Dr Alexandre Kalache and features Gary Green from the Australian Men’s Shed Association, Dr Mandy Stanley from the University of South Australia, and Dr Ian Chapman.  There will be an expo component showcasing and promoting male targeted programs, services  and associations and refreshments will be provided. This seminar and expo has a lot to offer both general members of the public and service providers.   We are hopeful to get as many men as possible attending as this will provide a fantastic opportunity to shape the thinking around Age Friendly Cities.   Look forward to seeing you there and please pass this on to anyone with an interest.

These seminars are suitable for anyone with a personal or professional interest in issues to do with ageing.

“Why has the Retirement Village Industry got it Wrong?”

Speakers:

The Retirement Village has been seen a light on the horizon for South Australian ageing baby boomers. Marketed as both a symbol of affluence and security in later life, the image of a lifestyle that extends many of the desirable aspects of mid-life (an active outdoor lifestyle, social engagement and pleasing aesthetics) is a powerful one.

But does the reality live up to the glossy brochure? This seminar explores the experiences of those involved in planning and running Retirement Villages as well as those who live in them. It asks how effective the Retirement Village setting can be in meeting the needs and wants of older South Australians. Prof. Andrew Beer and Dr Debbie Faulkner discuss their extensive research into these questions, and Rob Hankins speaks on the ways in which the organisations he has been involved in have addressed some of the problems posed by the Retirement Village setting.

For anyone working in, planning or managing in this rapidly growing form of community living, and for those who are living in or considering Retirement Village living for themselves or a family member, this seminar will illuminate the benefits and challenges for the Retirement Village sector in the coming years.

 “Promoting Independence with Assistive Technologies: Intersection of Engineering, Rehabilitation and Social Sciences”

This seminar will explore how an interdisciplinary approach can lead to innovative technologies and the design of new aids to maximise independence amongst older and frail adults.
