Indigenous Ageing
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ageing Committee (ATSIAC) held its inaugural meeting at the Australian Association of Gerontology Annual National Conference in Melbourne in November 2004. It was an initiative of Professor GA (Tony) Broe (AAG President, 2003-2006) who has had a long standing involvement in the provision of health services to Aboriginal communities, especially through his work in the La Perouse Community in Sydney.
The ATSIAC Committee is convened by Professor Broe and is co-chaired by Professor Lisa Jackson Pulver, of the Muru Marri Indigenous Health Unit, and University of NSW.
The Committee is open to everyone interested in Indigenous ageing whether as a service provider, policy maker, researcher, community representative or consumer.
The Committee has regular telephone link-ups, regional meetings and workshops and an Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the Australian Association of Gerontology National Conference.
The ATSIAC IS currently working on a number of projects to improve knowledge and understanding of indigenous ageing.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (those aged 50+) membership of the Australian Association of Gerontology is available at a special rate of $71.60 per annum.
