“Is Alzheimer's Disease Preventable”
Professor Kaarin Anstey,
Director, Dementia Collaborative Research Centre
Early Diagnosis and Prevention, The Australian National University
Professor Kaarin Anstey is Director of the DCRC - Early Diagnosis and Prevention, Director of the Ageing Research Unit at the Centre for Mental Health Research, and an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow. She completed her PhD in cognitive ageing in 1997 and undertook an NHMRC Training Fellowship at Flinders University and Neuroscience Research Australia from 1998-2001. Her research interests include the epidemiology of cognitive decline and dementia, depression in late life, predictors of longevity, psychological wellbeing, driving and mobility, and longitudinal methods. She is the Principal Investigator on an NHMRC Strategic Grant on Ageing Well Ageing Productively that involves pooling 9 longitudinal ageing studies to model health and ageing.

Alzheimer’s Australia
Glenn Rees has worked at senior levels in the British and Australian Public Services. In Britain he worked as Private Secretary to senior Ministers, in the Cabinet Office and in Economic Departments. In Australia since 1976 he has worked in program and policy areas including Prime Minister and Cabinet, Employment and Training, Aged Care, Disabilities, Housing and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission. He was Chair of the Nursing Homes and Hostels Review in 1986 and was involved in implementing the first wave of aged care reforms. He has been CEO of Alzheimer's Australia since 2000 during which time Dementia has been made a National Health Priority.

Ageing and Spirituality: Resistance, Resilience and Change

The conference aims to bring practitioners, researchers and older people together to share and examine:
- Ageing and positive well-being in later life
- Issues of chronic ill health, disability and resilience in later life
- Changes experienced in ageing related to loss and grief
- Integration of spiritual care into holistic programs of care for older adults
- Finding meaning in life and coping with the changes of ageing, especially psychosocial, emotional and spiritual changes
- The use of story in supporting continued growth, well-being and resilience in later life
- Contemporary information and skill sharing strategies for working with people who have dementia and their carers

Professor Rebok has a life-course developmental orientation, a background in gerontology and cognitive aging, developmental psychology, prevention science, and public mental health, and postdoctoral training in neuropsychology, neuroscience, epidemiology, and biostatistics. His major research interests cover three interrelated areas: 1) identification of early risk and protective factors on later life cognitive health and daily function; 2) prevention of age related cognitive decline, memory loss, depression, and disability; 3) study of the short-and long-term outcomes of cognitive intervention trials with children and with normal and impaired older adults.

Dr Mary-Ann Ryall
26th February 2009, 4pm-5.30pmDr Ryall's talk explored the complex web of issues that need to be considered when prescribing pharmacological treatments for older people to ensure optimal care. Dr Ryall has been a staff specialist geriatrician within the Aged Care and Rehabilitation Stream of ACT Health since early 2004 and is also a lecturer in geriatric medicine at the ANU medical school.

Canberra postgraduate students spoke about their research on various topics in successful ageing, including:
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and its role in ageing research
• Health and physical activity in ageing
• Bereavement and cognitive function: Some surprising results
• In-car assistive technologies to help with safe mobility in ageing
This was followed by two open discussion forums, where panels responded to audience questions and opinions on the topics of:
