Events 2010

The Australian Association of Gerontology and the Australian and New Zealand Society for Geriatric Medicine warmly invite you to this seminar as part of the 2010 Combined Seminar Series.

These seminars are suitable for anyone with a personal or professional interest in issues to do with ageing.

Writing for publications in A and A* Journals

You are invited to a presentation designed for post-graduate students of ageing on writing for publication in A and A* journals.  This session will be presented by Dr Eva Kemps on July 15th at 2.30pm at Flinders University.

Please see the flyer for precise details.

Being the mid-year break for undergraduate students means that parking should be relatively easier.  You can access a map here: http://mtu.flinders.edu.au/map/index.cfm

Although the session is designed for post-graduate students it is certainly not restricted to students only.  Anyone interested in getting their research published will find this session informative, I'm sure.

The presentation will go for about 40 minutes with questions to follow and then an informal afternoon tea so people can continue discussion or just to catch up with people they haven't seen for a while.

‘DOES MARRIAGE MATTER IN LATER LIFE?’
An Insight into the Relationships of Older South Australian Couples

Presentations available:

It has long been suggested that marriage is protective in late life. Opportunities for social engagement and availability of emotional and instrumental support are enhanced for older individuals living with a spouse, compared to those living alone. This seminar will describe how or whether the marital relationship is indeed beneficial in late life; the pressures that exist in relation to transitions such as spousal illness or widowhood; and how older couples themselves perceive the ‘keys’ to a successful marriage.

Cancer and Older People

Establishing the First Geriatric Oncology Service in Australia

Prestentations available:

Robert J Prowse, Senior Consultant Geriatrician, Royal Adelaide Hospital
Nimit Singhal, Medical Oncologist, Royal Adelaide Hospital
Jeanette Prouse, Geriatric Oncology Nurse, Royal Adelaide Hospital

This seminar described the pioneer service in Australia for older people with newly diagnosed cancer.  Cancer is more common with increasing age, yet older people are often excluded from clinical trials of cancer therapy, are less often treated with current methods used in younger people and when treated, often receive sub-optimal doses. Internationally, specific programs of care have been established for older cancer patients.  The Royal Adelaide Hospital Cancer Centre took the opportunity to open the first such service in Australia and to date has assessed 400 patients.  The presenters explored the rationale for these programs, describe the program at the RAH as it is now, provide data on its early operation and look at future development and evaluation.
